Mastering the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals: A Memory Guide

Remembering all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) might seem like a challenge, but with the right techniques, anyone can recall them effortlessly. Whether you’re a student, an activist, or a sustainability professional, having these goals at your fingertips can be incredibly valuable. Here’s how you can memorize them effectively.

1. Use Acronyms and Mnemonics

Creating a memorable acronym using the first letter of each SDG can be a powerful way to recall them. Here’s an example:

“No Poor Zero Good People Quitting Dirty Insane Jobs Inevitably Reduce Climate Life Peace Plans”

Each word in this phrase represents an SDG in order:

No Poverty (1)

Poor Hunger (Zero Hunger – 2)

Zero Health (Good Health & Well-Being – 3)

Good Education (Quality Education – 4)

People Gender Equality (5)

Quitting Water (Clean Water & Sanitation – 6)

Dirty Energy (Affordable & Clean Energy – 7)

Insane Economy (Decent Work & Economic Growth – 8)

Jobs Infrastructure (Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure – 9)

Inevitably Inequality (Reduced Inequalities – 10)

Reduce Cities (Sustainable Cities & Communities – 11)

Climate Responsible Consumption & Production (12)

Life Climate Action (13)

Peace Life Below Water (14)

Plans Life on Land (15)

Peace (Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions – 16)

Partnerships (Partnerships for the Goals – 17)

2. Associate Each SDG with a Visual Image

Visualizing each SDG as an image can make recall easier. For example:

Imagine a globe with a lock (No Poverty, SDG 1) symbolizing security for all.

Picture a healthy meal on a table (Zero Hunger, SDG 2).

See a hospital with happy patients (Good Health & Well-Being, SDG 3).

Visualize a stack of books (Quality Education, SDG 4).

Envision a female superhero (Gender Equality, SDG 5).

Tying concepts to imagery can strengthen recall and make it more engaging.

3. Chunk the SDGs into Groups

Breaking the 17 SDGs into smaller, logical groups can make them easier to remember:

Basic Human Needs: SDGs 1–6 (Poverty, Hunger, Health, Education, Gender, Water)

Infrastructure & Economy: SDGs 7–12 (Energy, Jobs, Innovation, Inequality, Cities, Consumption)

Environmental Goals: SDGs 13–15 (Climate, Oceans, Land)

Governance & Partnerships: SDGs 16–17 (Peace & Justice, Partnerships)

4. Create a Story That Connects Them

Stories help cement information in memory. For example:

“A young girl named Hope (No Poverty) wakes up hungry (Zero Hunger) but finds a nutritious meal (Good Health). She goes to school (Quality Education) where boys and girls are treated equally (Gender Equality). On her way home, she drinks clean water (Clean Water & Sanitation) and passes by a house using solar panels (Affordable & Clean Energy). Her father works in a factory with fair wages (Decent Work & Economic Growth), and her mother is a scientist developing new technologies (Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure). The family lives in a safe city (Sustainable Cities & Communities) with low waste production (Responsible Consumption & Production). As she grows, she becomes an activist fighting climate change (Climate Action), protecting oceans (Life Below Water) and forests (Life on Land). Eventually, she works for peace and justice (Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions) and collaborates with global partners to make a better world (Partnerships for the Goals).”

5. Leverage Music and Rhymes

Many people learn better through rhythm and song. Creating a simple song or chant with the SDGs in order can make them easier to recall.

Mastering the 17 UN SDGs doesn’t have to be difficult. By using acronyms, visualization, storytelling, and repetition, you can easily recall all the goals whenever needed. Understanding these goals deeply allows us to be more engaged in sustainability efforts and contribute effectively to a better world.
